Park Power (for 4 boys under 10)

Barcelona's Parc de la Ciutadella was a great way to burn off some steam one afternoon, though we struggled to find a place to play soccer amidst all the people taking their siestas and the "keep off the grass" signs. But at last we found an empty corner of the park so the boys could get some passing, dribbling, and kicking time.

The park's "power" used to be a much-hated Citadel, a star-shaped imperial fortress that was destroyed in the mid 19th century by a Catalan general. We walked up (and down) all the steps of the impressive baroque statue/fountain which was built in the late 19th century by Joseph Forseps (who was assisted by a young Gaudi!)

We also got better views of Barcelona's green parrots, as well as this hilarious woolly mammoth turned to stone statue. The lake full of rowboats on a dead-hot day also hosted these strange random trees. And finally it was time for a granizada and home!
