Date Palm Heaven

We spent several hours wandering around the date palm plantation at the botanic garden, searching for the earliest palm recorded (1903?), the tallest cactus, the weirdest tree, etc. Each tree is carefully marked with its year, variety, and the palms at least are given memorial names of long-ago heroes, politicians, etc. Since the 1960s, the garden has planted a variety of other kinds of trees from around the world but the focus is still the palm. Ben figured out the timing of one intermittent fountain so it appeared as if he were conjuring it over and over again with his waving hands. Nate found yet another babbling brook for racing palm fronds. And Ed and I were happy to explore the endless varieties of plants and birds. We'd had dates from these very palm trees (or those nearby) in our hotel room as a welcome gift so it was interesting to see the trees up close.
